A sitemap improves the way search engines index your store and is specifically designed to find the pages that web crawlers can miss. A sitemap can be configured to index all pages and images.
Your Sitemap must be updated every time the content of your site changes, which can be daily, weekly or monthly. The settings allow you to set the frequency and priority for each type of content.
When enabled, Magento creates a file called sitemap.xml which is saved in the installation in the specified location. The settings give you the ability to set the frequency of updates and the priority for each type of content. Your Sitemap must be updated every time the content of your site changes, which can be daily, weekly, or monthly.
While your site is under development, you can include instructions in the robots.txt file for web crawlers to avoid indexing the site. So before launch, you can edit the instructions to allow the site to be indexed.
To create Site Map follow below steps:
Step 1: Login to admin panel and go to Marketing -> SEO & Search -> Site Map.
Step 2: Click on Add Sitemap.
- Enter the name of the Sitemap file. For example: sitemap.xml
- Enter the path to determine where the Sitemap file should be located on the server. Make sure the path is recordable. For example: “/sitemap/” or “/” for base path (path must be recordable)
Step 3: Click on Save button or if you generate at the same time click on Same & Generate.
